Chapter 8

WHEN MY ALARM went off, I bolted upright, my heart revving as the events of the previous day flooded back in.

The TV was dark, and Robin was no longer on the sofa next to me. I took a deep breath, trying to calm my pulse. I needed to focus, not let my nerves make me crazy.

I pulled on my shoes and went down the hallway to the guest bathroom. After using the toilet, splashing my face, and doing what I could to smooth my hair, I went back across the living room to the short hall that led to the master suite, where I assumed Robin was.

The door was closed. I leaned against it, my head sideways to try to hear whether he was up. Music was playing, and there was the soft sound of a shower’s spray. I let out a little breath, relieved I wouldn’t have to get him up.

Back in the living room, I cleaned up the remnants of my makeshift meal from the night before, tossing the empty Ritz sleeve and yogurt container, and sticking my plate and spoon into the sleek stainless-steel dishwasher.

While I waited for Robin, I checked my phone. There were more irate messages from my sister, which I ignored. Jen also texted me, saying the night had been uneventful with Mom. If there was one positive to all my failures since I’d come to the Bay Area, it was that I’d been almost completely distracted from the gnawing worry over my mother. As I pictured her lying still on her bed, hooked up to monitors, fear tried to crowd back into my thoughts and knot into a hard ball in my stomach. I shoved my phone in my pocket and went to the window to look at the view and try not to think of my family.

Jen had said she could cover for three days and two nights. I’d already used up a night. I’d become less concerned about the time limit than getting Stephanie to agree to help me, though. I nervously checked the time on my phone. We needed to leave for the magical artifact store in ten minutes.

Unable to enjoy the sweeping and no doubt insanely costly view from Robin’s condo, I paced in front of the window. I had no idea how I was going to pay Robin back after he bought me something to offer to Stephanie, but I’d have to figure that out later.

“Hey,” came his voice.

I stopped pacing and looked up to see him emerging from the hall, green hair still damp from his shower.

“Ready to go?” he asked.

I nodded.

“You want to eat something first?”

“No, I’m good,” I said a little too fast and forcefully. I tried to let some of the tension drop from my shoulders. “I mean, we have a few minutes, if you need to grab something.”

He rummaged around in the pantry and came out with a couple of bagels. Placing them each in a paper towel, he offered one.

“In case you get hungry on the ride,” he said.
